Literature Text

I drove into work early the next day, pulling into an emptying parking lot. Cars full of kids and a few workers quickly drove away as the pizzeria closed for the night. The sun was just setting, casting an eerie reddish glow over the lot.
I quickly got out of my hand-me-down car and went inside the building. I looked around, seeing the animatronics stationary and standing on their dimmed stage platform. They stayed still thankfully, even though I was about to bolt at the sight of them.
“_______! You’re early for the night shift.” The owner made his way over, getting a nervous look on his face. “We were just cleaning up.” He informed, giving a glance around the messy place. He smiled and stopped in front of me, “To what do I owe the visit?”
“Um… I’d like to talk about the animatronics.” I explained, clenching my hands nervously. It felt weird to approach the owner about this…
“Do you want to quit?” He asked seriously, getting even more anxious.
“Oh! No, sir, I don’t want to quit. It’s nothing like that.” I assured, pleased to see relief wash over Mr. Fazbear’s face. “I want to discuss their maintenance.” I admitted warily, wringing my hands.
“Ok… what about it?” He asked genuinely. Thankfully, he didn’t seem defensive or angry.
“Well… I fixed Foxy’s sound box last night and was wondering if I could work on the others some while you guys are cleaning up – before my shift. You see, my dad was a mechanic and he taught…”
“Wait, hold up… You fixed something on Foxy last night?” He asked, drawing out the word ‘night,’
“Yeah, I’m sorry if you didn’t want It, I just…” I tried to backtrack.
“No, no! It’s quite all right. Appreciated actually.” He laughed and looked at the other three on the stage. “We’d appreciate the help, honestly.” He looked me in the eye, sizing something up. “You can start today if you want. And if you do well, then we’ll count these hours towards your salary.”
“Thank you, sir! You won’t be disappointed!”
“I’m sure.” He muttered and rolled his eyes, seeming to lighten up. “Mechanics are expensive!” He said loudly before turning towards the kitchens. “I’m going to check on the cleaning crew, be back in a bit.” He told me. I resisted the urge to ask him to stay with me in the stage area… I was still afraid of being alone with these beings.
I quickly checked my watch and saw I had a few hours before my shift, enough time to do some fixing…
After I had gathered some cleaning supplies and an old manual from the back closet, I stood in front of the yellow one. I repressed a shiver when looking at the chicken that had caused me so many scares the last few nights. This one was probably a female and I believed Chica was her name. I smiled hesitantly at the still figure before me, reaching out to open a metal plate on her side. I had noticed that she sometimes had a limp on this side, like something was catching.
Inside was a mess. There were crisscrossed wires and nasty bits of food and plastic. These creatures must have to deal with all sorts of gross children. I scowled and pulled up a chair and trashcan. I began pulling out the closest bits of substance, throwing them away. I then noticed a small piston that controlled part of the being’s hip movement during a walk cycle. I noticed a bundle of plastic in between the joint, preventing full movement. I reached inside and tugged on the material, easily removing it from the animatronic without it ripping.
I continued on Chica, getting out the worse of the hiccups in her system. I then moved on to Bonnie, cleaning his joints out with similar care. Since Freddy really scared me, I carefully avoided him. The owner came in a few times to check on me, happy with my progress. He thanked me for the help and said he’d add these hours to my pay. He then left the help finish the cleaning crew.
I checked my watch and saw I had an hour left. I lifted my hand to cover my mouth as I yawned. I turned to the taller animatronic, the bear. I carefully approached and began a similar process of getting gunk out his joints. I reorganized some wires in the process, tucking back into their proper places.
Maybe these beings are ‘asleep’ during this time? Maybe they are ‘off’ somehow? It’d be really strange if they were actually awake while I was doing this…
“Ok, ______. I’m out of here. I was doing some paperwork. I will see you tomorrow.” The owner called from the door, giving me a warm smile. I returned the smile and stood up, putting away all my supplies. I checked the time, seeing I had only a few minutes left. I gasped and bolted for the office, getting there just as my ‘begin shift’ alarm went off in my phone.

Another chapter of 'Mechanical.' Thanks to those who kept pressuring me to submit, I kind of forgot about it for a bit. XD

Well, this chapter is mainly set-up for the next one. It's a valuable chapter, but the next is so much more fun.
Freddy will definitely be in the next chapter. For sure.
